[ Sounds like that makes Zangetsu the best to ask, after all. ]

I've just finished speaking with the Ringmaster and been told of a new problem, mainly revolving around Mr. Strange. As you may know, he was taken by one of the faeries. As you may also know, the chances are high that he will be turned against us.

[moonfang]

[a pause, and then Zangetsu loses his usual casual inflection, dropping into a more serious tone]

... I know. I was there. I was patrolling near the carnival grounds when I smelled that fiery fae bastard and went to check it out. Ignatius said he would spare the rest of us if someone went with him, and Strange volunteered. [another pause, then;] Whatever I can do to help get him back, boss. I know his powers are a pain in the ass.

More than you might realize. The magic he wields is only limited by his imagination and his own morals, the latter of which the Courts seem to lack.

[ But he's serious about this. Good. ]

I am going to ask the Nightrider send you along with whomever he sends after Strange and if there is no other option... I would ask that you kill him. [ One might think there'd be some hesitation about asking that or even some, any, emotion. There isn't. If anything, he's making an effort to keep it all out of his voice. ] Which brings us to the newer dilemma, of how Ignatius is as liable to take his soul back as the Ringmaster is.

Kill him?! Hold on, wait a moment. I can do that, no problem. But... [HE NEEDS TO GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT FIRST] Does he have the Ringmaster's backup on hand? One of her eggs?

He does. I would not be asking this otherwise and hence why I ask about souls. Seems those are what go into the egg, assuming it can get there.

[ Easy answer, at least. ]

[phew. Ok. That puts his mind at ease, a bit. He also hums thoughtfully]

Makes sense! What it sounds like is that the Ringmaster has a way of makin' new, compatible bodies for loose souls with those eggs somehow. It's ain't completely dissimilar from the gigai tech we have at home... So yer askin' me to make sure Strange finds his way to that egg, and not back into hothead's hands, yeah?

Originally, I was only going to ask you to kill him, however... Would that be something you could? Steal a soul without eating it?

[moonfang]

I, or someone, will have ta kill him to get his soul free. After that... I'll be honest, I've never done it before. [he admits it a bit sheepishly] But... I've told you, haven't I? That I'm a weapon, a sword, as well as a soul-eatin' beast. But I don't think I ever told you what purpose I serve, and you probably didn't talk much to Ichigo while he was here. [he chuckles; Ichigo wasn't the world's friendliest guy, and he didn't talk about himself much] We're a Shinigami, after all. "Death God". Part of his job is literally to shepherd souls, and my job is to make sure he can do his job. What kind of zanpakutou would I be if I couldn't manage to ferry one measly ghost from point A to point B, huh?

So an angel. [ Which would make Portland hilarious if Childermass had any idea what Zangetsu had ended up being. ] Or something akin to it.

[ He can't even add 'but scary' since angels are typically described as scary anyway. ]

In any case, if it does come down to that, if he does die, I would make it your job to ensure he returns to the carnival. The egg itself is meant to activate on its own, I think, but he'd have no defense out in the library...

[Zangetsu barks out one of his distorted, unhinged laughs] An angel! Well, I suppose in some cultures it might be like that~ [he doesn't comment on the irony from Portland, either, but IT IS NOT LOST ON HIM.]

Nah, I getcha. Normally the Ringmaster's contract would be enough to draw it where it belongs, I suspect. But with Ignatius layin' claim, too... Hehehe.. you know what's funny? This technically is an acquisition job.
